A friendly guide from Ikonic Roofing on spotting issues early
At Ikonic Roofing, we spend our days up on rooftops across Dorset, and one thing we see over and over again is this: most roofing problems start small. A little shift here, a bit of moisture there — tiny things that often go unnoticed until they’ve grown into something much bigger.
The good news? You don’t need to be a roofer to catch the early signs. With a few simple checks from ground level, you can spot when something isn’t quite right and get it looked at before it becomes a headache.
Slipped, cracked or missing tiles
If you’re standing in your garden and notice a tile that looks slightly out of place, cracked, or missing altogether, it’s worth paying attention. Even one small gap can let in more water than you’d expect. Strong winds, ageing materials and falling debris can all cause this, especially in coastal towns like Poole or Bournemouth.
Moss, leaves and general build-up
A bit of moss is normal, but if you’re seeing large clumps or a lot of debris sitting on the roof, it can hold moisture and interrupt the natural flow of rainwater. Over time, that trapped moisture can cause problems. Keeping the roof as clear as possible helps everything stay in good shape.
Gutters and roofline looking a bit tired
Gutters that are overflowing, drooping, or pulling away from the fascia often indicate that something isn’t working as it should. When water can’t drain properly, it usually finds other ways down — and not the ways you want. A quick glance during heavy rain can tell you a lot.
Damp patches or musty smells indoors
Sometimes the first sign of a roofing issue isn’t outside at all. If you spot discolouration on ceilings or notice a damp smell in the loft, it could be a hint that water is finding its way in somewhere. It’s not always dramatic — sometimes it’s slow and subtle.
After storms or strong winds, take a moment to look up
Dorset weather likes to keep things interesting. After a spell of strong wind or a heavy downpour, it’s worth doing a quick visual check from the ground. Tiles might have shifted, flashing could have lifted, or guttering may have taken a knock.
When should you call us?
If anything looks unusual or you just have a feeling something’s not quite right, that’s a good time to bring in a professional. You don’t need to climb up there yourself — in fact, we’d strongly advise against it. We’ve got the equipment, the safety gear and the experience to assess things properly.
We’re always happy to carry out a closer inspection and let you know what’s going on, even if it turns out to be something minor. A bit of peace of mind goes a long way when it comes to your roof.
